Aerosol Jet Printing Flexible Electrodes

During my first summer as a volunteer undergraduate researcher, I learned about aerosol jet printing flexible, skin-conforming electrical circuits on conformable surfaces. I assisted in the printing and transferring process of these electrodes that were used to collect biosignals, such as electrooculography (EOG, eye movement) and electroencephalography (EEG, brain activity) signals.

Second Conductive Layer of Electrode Design
Actuation of Robot Arm Using EOG and EEG Signals

Part of the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) course at Georgia Tech, I worked with another Biomedical Engineering student to collect EOG and EEG signals and conduct a feature extraction to see if there was anything notable to use for the classification of signals. We then used the features to train a machine-learning algorithm to classify signals: for the eye, we focused on moving the eyes 1) up, 2) down, 3) closing them. For the brain, we attempted to classify 1) happy thoughts and 2) sad thoughts. Ultimately, we were only able to map the opening and closing of the eye to move an Arduino robotic arm up and down.
